AI Artwork is a series where I ask an AI to generate various images about a video game or video game series and see what it comes up with.
Last time, I used AI to try and generate images based on characters from The Legend of Zelda series. I thought that went over so well that I have decided to continue this series. This time, I will be looking at the Castlevania series. There are a lot of really interesting characters throughout the many decades of Castlevania and so it will be an interesting challenge to see how well AI interprets my prompts.
Since the last time I tried this, OpenAI has released a new image processing model which supposedly makes better quality images and also handles text rendering a lot better. The downside is that image generation is quite a bit slower. You can read about it more here: https://openai.com/index/introducing-4o-image-generation/
NOTE: Please let me know if you want to see more of these. I can do other series/game characters, and I can also go back to Zelda or Castlevania. There are a ton more characters to check out in both series.
Okay, let’s get into it. The first character we have to start with is Simon Belmont, our hero from the very first Castlevania game released on the NES:

Please provide a piece of artwork based on Simon Belmont from Castlevania

So right off the bat, it’s worth noting that I entered a single fairly vague prompt and immediately got a good image. If you’ll remember with the Zelda post, ChatGPT could not generate an image for me based on my initial prompt because it would violate copyright or IP protections. I’m not sure if the AI just got smarter and was able to generate an image without violating copyright or if it’s ignoring copyright and IP protections altogether.
Anyway, the image itself is great! The man looks just like Simon Belmont with his brown leather armor and massive whip. The whip looks a bit off, seemingly frozen in place up in the air when it should be dangling more. Despite that, we get extra stuff like Dracula’s castle in the background AND a rendering of the evil vampire himself. Dracula seems to be a bit cross-eyed but otherwise looks great. I was very impressed with the result on this one.
