By the late 2000s, The Legend of Zelda franchise had firmly established itself as a pillar of gaming innovation. Ocarina of Time had revolutionized 3D adventure games, The Wind Waker had defied expectations with its cel-shaded art, and Phantom Hourglass had proven that touch controls could successfully redefine Zelda gameplay for handheld consoles. So, where would Nintendo take the franchise next?

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - A Review

Well, I have now finished The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Was it a great experience? No, no it wasn’t. Did I have a good time? No, not really. Why is that, you ask? I will attempt to explain it in thorough detail below but in my opinion there were several mis-steps and poor decisions. The game is not bad but it’s also at this point my least favorite entry in the Legend of Zelda franchise.

For the series' next entry on the Nintendo DS, the developers at Nintendo EAD found themselves once again coming up with new concepts and innovations. The result was The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, an installment that not only introduced a completely new method of world traversal—train travel—but also gave Princess Zelda her most active role in the series to date. But getting there wasn’t without its challenges. From skepticism over train-based exploration to difficulties in implementing unique DS mechanics, Spirit Tracks underwent a fascinating journey of development.
