A few weeks ago, I released an informational post regarding the MiSTer FPGA device. I went over the history about the MiSTer Project as well as what FPGA chips are and what they are good for, generally speaking.

In today’s post, I will be going through step by step what it takes to build a functioning MiSTer FPGA board. I will try to be as descriptive as possible, but if anyone has any questions I am happy to help if I can. Now, on with the building!

Step 1: The Hardware

Before I begin, I want to reiterate that if you don’t want to build your own FPGA board, you don’t have to. There are many sites where you can buy pre-built boards that are basically plug and play ready. I have had a great experience with the site MiSTer Addons, so I will be linking to their stuff for the majority of this post. Here’s one of their prebuilt systems. The price has gone up since I last checked, presumably due to shortages in inventory, because of “you know what”.
